Side quest no.4: Walking into the unknown

What does this one want? He once again asked himself after a few years of chasing the unknown. To create his world that breathes life using drawings, that’s the answer this one once again got from himself. Then why are yours truly only draws human figure? He answered none. Is yours truly wrong on only focusing on one topic? This one doesn’t have answer.

This one seems to be practising a lot of human figures that he burned out himself, that instead of improving seems to be getting worse. Every time this one encounter a dynamic head angle, he feels his mind is bending, even though he already did that right in the past. This one thought he already threw away his perfectionist side but it seems like it’s still lingering around that it’s haunting every drawing he did even practices.

Anyway, this one is still designing the environment for the game he’s trying to develop for his AGP. Although this one isn’t good at doing background or environment, designing it seems to be fun. Yours truly realised that this should be learned by him since if he’s planning to create a world, he should make it beautiful even though his sketch is trash-tier.

Side quest no.3: Line flows in you(2)

Studying the anatomy starting from skeleton to muscle help since it tells this one the right proportion for the body that this one doesn’t need to guess if it’s right or wrong. For now, this one is currently at the chapter on how to attach the form of the torso for the action lines of the pose. Learning the torso is important for this one since everything is connected to it, the limbs and the head, and by knowing on how it work allows someone to gain the ability to draw with good proportion while retain the dynamism of the pose.

Side quest no.2: Line flows in you(1)

Returning into the basic seems to be fun too. Even though this one already tried gesture drawing in the past, doing it again seems to teach yours truly new things that he didn’t notice before. Right now, this one is currently at the chapter about the action lines, the direction, and relationship of each body parts. Yours truly is striving to get used on drawing dynamic poses with a small amount of time. As someone who often has a hit and misses his initial sketches that result of many hours wasted due to redoing or rethinking until he reaches a believable look in terms of body poses. This one learns who to draw loosely with great control on his pen and more confident on my lines as a result of relearning gesture drawing. For this lesson chapter, this one did a 1-minute gesture drawing of each pose while capturing the as much as possible the dynamism of the poses.

Quest no.3: Abyss is always close to you

This one is planning to make an exploration/photography game for his AGP. Though this one already fully decided on what game to develop, another problem arose. This one still struggles on the coding part since he is not a coder and doesn’t have a single idea on how to make a working Polaroid camera in unity. Fortunately, this one got help from his programming instructor on how to do it and with this new knowledge, it’s now on this one to fully polish and progresses further to the game development. Although this one’s prototype for the Polaroid camera still not like the one he envisioned, this is a good starting point for yours truly.

Quest no.2: Isometric Structure

It seems like this one improved with the time that he needs to spend in making a 3D model, unlike the time this one created his 3D level design game for coursework. But this time, this one tried to make an RTS-styled building or isometric structure. Even though 3D modelling is much easy to create now, this one faces another obstacle to fully give it life.
UV unwrapping and normal mapping, this one still struggles to do this efficiently. There’s something about UV unwrapping that this one doesn’t get, he feels it’s weird sometimes. It is the same with normal mapping, this still doesn’t understand it fully. The bumps sometimes look so abstract and unorganised that this one needs to redo it multiple times until he gets the proper one.

Side quest no.1: Line flows in you

While this one is still far from reaching his goal in terms of art improvement, he tried to learn other things like a gesture drawing. This one noticed that he is getting a hard time thinking of a pose since this one is stubborn sometimes that he doesn’t want to use any references, which sometimes lead to a very stiff form. Flowy lines and dynamic poses are lacking in this one’s art so he tried to improve them along the way. It’s fun since even this one needs to draw loosely, he still needs to focus on his control.

Quest no.1: Silhouettes

This one has been doing character designs using silhouettes for a while now. It’s really quick and fun that he feels like he did some progress even though they are just silhouettes. Since this one always too much time on one task in the past that he pressured himself in the end due to lack of time management, this one decided that he will take it easy and just let his creative urge took over and throw perfectionist attitude out. For now, it’s working that this one manages to have time for other stuff like 3D modelling, gesture drawing and anatomy study.

Words for a lost time

Experiences and skills are what you still lacking. Explore more outside your sanctuary and create a better adventure than what you currently have!

Dreaming alone won’t do you anything and working hard doesn’t mean you will automatically attain your dreams, most of the time you don’t. But at least you did and achieved something as consolation. Hard work betrays none, but dreams betray many. Even so, working too much isn’t good either. It will either exhaust or break you, so work wiser.

You are an artist of yourself and your life is your canvas, you either choose the right colours or blindly use them until only black remains.
